Before Peter went to work on December 29th, we decided where we wanted to spend our 5 consecutive days off...Yosemite was the plan all along but the weather failed us so we headed east instead. 12 hours before departure we planned our trip to Arizona...well, I don't think "planned" is really the right word. We knew we were staying with his parents (who were out there visiting the area) the first night and we wanted to see the Grand Canyon. That was the extent of our "plan". So, when Peter came home from work at 8 am on December 30th, he packed, we loaded the car, and headed to Costco. Ha. Just had to throw that in there based off previous posts...we filled up the gas tank. THEN, we headed east. Peter slept some of the way, having just worked 13 hours, and I drove the whole way. We left about 10 am and arrived around 6-7 pm. That first night was low key considering we were pretty pooped. The next day, the 9 Styffes that were present (missed you Nathan!) loaded into the car about 1:00 after lounging all morning and took off to see Sedona. Snow hit town the previous days and the red rock mixed in with white snow was stunning.
The Styffe family decided to stay one more night so we were able to all celebrate New Year's Eve together in the condo we stayed in. Yay for time shares!
A little blueberry cider to celebrate...
The next morning Peter and I loaded all our stuff back in Civy while the rest of the clan packed up their stuff. They were headed home while we were headed for the Grand Canyon!
We stopped in Flagstaff for lunch.
It was very strange to see a plowed parking lot and eat at a Mexican restaurant with snow covering the sign
and I had never seen a plowed drive through!
On to the Grand Canyon!
When we pulled up to the entrance, I asked the guy what the road conditions were like inside the park. "Terrible. Just terrible. People have been sliding off the road all day."
Umm.. Peter, I don't want to see the Grand Canyon bad enough to die in it.
We'll be fine, I'll drive slow.
We proceeded with caution...
Can you find me?
Notice Civy's icicles...
This is what we drove on/through...
It was a true sleigh ride, except without a sleigh, 4 wheel drive, or chains.
More to come down the road!
pun intended.
xo, p&l
