On the Hunt

We are on the hunt for the perfect dog. We can't get one (if we get one) until I get out of school which is June 14th. If we get one, I want to be home to train it. I am sold on a miniature dachshund. Perfect size for indoors and more importantly, my lap. I only like the shorthaired ones that are mostly one color. I'm not a dapple fan. Peter is not sold on such a puppy because they do tend to have health problems (my parents' first one broke it's back and we put it down as appose to sticking it in a wheelchair the rest of it's life). Plus, he would like something mid-size, 30+ pounds. I am totally willing to look at other dogs but after reading through all the breeds, he can't come up with a favorite. If it looks cool, it isn't great with kids. If it is the right size then it scores low on the intelligence chart...we just can't win. I researched a couple hours today plus called two breeders. It's a work in progress.
But this very moment is what started my longing for a puppy....Peter's at work and I want a buddy! Sure I have friends to call, the gym to visit, family to hang out with but sometimes I want to be at my house, in my PJs, looking like dirt....with a puppy on my lap. You're thinking, "Laura, they grow up and get bigger!" Not my little wiener dog!! My parents' current dog is 3 years old and weighs in at a monstrous 8 pounds.
Maggie, our first dachshund.
Maggie again
Peter enjoying Molly, the second family dachshund.
My little Molly Bear out camping with the family.
Reality check/ the draw backs
1. We have to take it outside to go potty or get a piddle pad for the garage. Our garage door already has a dog door.
2. If we want to go somewhere for the weekend we have to figure out accommodations or whether she can come with us.
3. You take a gamble on the personality you get & how sturdy their genes are.

Well, that didn't close my case. Ideally, we should wait 'til we move to a place with a backyard but that will be awhile! I don't think I can wait that long. Did I tell you we looked into getting a cat? That would at least eliminate problem #1. But after spending 5 minutes in the room with the cutest little orange rescue kitty, there was no denying I was allergic. The symptoms didn't cease until the following morning. I am not willing to take drugs in order to gain a companion. I'm not that desperate.

Well, that's our big news for the day. Sorry their is no definite solution. Any suggestions on a friendly, small(ish), shorthaired dog you think we might like? Know anyone getting ride of their dog?
